Muckerheide, Arnold M. #2 (26 MAR 1885 - 29 AUG 1957)

 

Rev. Arnold M. Muckerheide, 72, pastor of St. Bernard’s Church here, passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital at Marshfield on Thursday, Aug. 29, 1957.  The cause of death was coronary thrombosis.  He had been taken to the hospital on the previous day.

 

Arnold M. Muckerheide was born on March 26, 1885 at Wausau, Wis.  After his ordination he served as assistant pastor at Athens for a time and pastor at Wuerzburg and Auburndale, Wis., before coming to Thorp on Feb. 10, 1925.  He celebrated his 25th anniversary as pastor of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church here (Thorp, Clark Co., Wis.) in February 1950.

 

His body lay in state at the Thorp Funeral Home from Saturday until Sunday at 2 p.m., when members of the Holy Name Society and the Men’s Catholic Order of Foresters, in procession, escorted the body to St. Bernard’s Church, where Mass servers awaited in reception lines on eight side of the center church aisle.

 

Officiating at the Pontifical Solemn High Mass at 10:30 was the Most Rev. John P. Treacy, Bishop of La Crosse, and assisting officiating clergymen were Arch Priest, Msgr. H. Leuther of Boyd, Deacon of the Mass, Rev. Michael Mertens of Viroqua, Sub-Deacon, rev. R. Geissler of Bloomer, Deacon of Honor, Rev. Albert A. Raschke of Wausau, Deacon of Honor, Rev. J. Pinion of Colby, Eulogist, Msgr. Wm. Daniels of Chippewa Falls, Master of Ceremonies, Msgr. James P. Finucan of La Crosse, Acolytes, Rev. E. F. Hartung of Greenwood, and Rev. Xavier Reichert of Collegeville, Minn., Thuirfer, Rev. F. Knopp of Edson, Book Bearers, Rev. Chester Moczarny of Stevens Point, Mitre Bearer, Rev. Joseph Wagner, Cosier Bearer, Rev. Francis Heindl of Holy Cross Seminary of La Crosse, Candle Bearer, Rev. G. Hinger of Holy Cross Seminary of La Crosse.

 

The Most Rev. John P. Treacy, Bishop of La Cross, concluded the church services with a talk of commendation. 

 

Priests and pallbearers on Monday were: Rev. Francis Piekarski, Thorp, Rev. E. L. Knauf, Augusta, Rev. C. P. Schumacher, Eau Claire, Rev. Charles Wolf, Durand, Rev. Peter Leketas, Eau Claire, Rev. Joseph B. Cysewski, Mosinee.

 

Serving as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were: F. J. Conway, Emil Kostner, John C. Maier, Gilbert Voelker, John Hickman, Ray Ketterhagen, Art Jacques, Dr. F. P. Neis, Dr. B. L. Slota, George Malz, Clarence Ruff, Henry Haas and Herb Simet.

 

Forming the choir was a special chorus of singers known as the Diocesan Priest Chorus.

 

Funeral masses and services were held at 7:30 a.m. and at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 2nd.  Interment took place in the parish cemetery.

Surviving relatives of Rev. A. M. Muckerheide include two brothers, Martin J. Muckerheide of St. Louis Park, Minn., Clarence Z. Muckerheide of Wausau, two sisters, Miss Cora Muckerheide and Miss Loretta Muckerheide, both of Wausau.

 

Duties of pastor of St. Bernard’s Church on the death of Rev. Arnold Muckerheide were taken over until Monday by Rev. Thomas Garthwaite of Holy Cross Seminary of La Crosse.

 

Temporarily assigned no to the pastorate is Rev. J. B. Curtiss.
